Opportunity: 
In partnership with the Australia Defence Force, we are seeking an Environmental Officer to support our Defence Base Services (DBS) contract. Reporting to the Regional Environmental Services Manager, the purpose of the role is to oversee delivery of environmental programs and provide expert advice and assistance on environmental matters relating to Defence Base Services (DBS).

 

The Environmental Officer is expected to contribute to the improvement of environmental programs and how they are delivered, managed and monitored to support continual improvement and enhanced customer appreciation.

 

This is a permanent, full-time position located at RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia 5111. There is also some flexibility to occasionally work from other Defence Bases in South Australia.

 

Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Providing technical oversight of environmental works as required under the Estate Maintenance and Operations Services (EMOS) contract with the Department of Defence.
  • Developing and updating management plans and reporting systems for environmental works delivery.
  • Working with subcontractors to ensure timely delivery of key environmental programs, including, but not limited to: bushfire mitigation, weed management, arboriculture, feral animal and overabundant native species management, groundwater and surface water quality monitoring, and flora and fauna studies.
  • Analysing and reporting environmental performance to internal and external stakeholders and regulatory bodies.
  • Developing and maintaining positive working relationships with Defence, subcontractors and other stakeholders with respect to environmental programs and other environmental matters.
  • Advising and providing technical support to Facilities Maintenance and Project Managers on matters of environment and sustainability.
  • Responding to unplanned environmental issues through short-term works, variations to existing programs and incident response.

 

This role acts as a key liaison between the business and the Defence clients as well as Ventia’s stakeholders therefore you must have outstanding communication skills. 
In addition, we are looking for:

  • Tertiary qualifications in environmental science, natural resource management or equivalent experience.
  • Hold a current Wildlife Management (Controller) Permit (snake handling) or be willing to obtain. 
  • Knowledge of weed ecology and identification of common weed species in South Australia.
  • Knowledge of feral animal control methods and identification of common native/feral animals in South Australia. 
  • Experience with GIS and spatial data management systems such as ARCGIS, Collector and QGIS programs.
  • Understanding or knowledge of relevant Commonwealth Government legislation, policy and practice relevant to natural resource management
  • The ability to produce high quality technical reports, publications and management plans that are clear and concise, yet pitched at a non-expert audience.
  • Be willing to traveling to other Defence Bases, including Woomera, throughout the year. 

Must be eligible to hold a Defence Security Clearance. As a result of this requirement the applicant must be an Australian Citizen.
