About the role 

This full-time Spatial Systems Architect role is responsible for leading the strategic use of GIS and spatial data across Defence. You’ll manage a team of analysts, drive innovation, and ensure spatial systems support estate planning, asset management, and compliance. This role is key to enhancing spatial intelligence and aligning GIS platforms with operational needs. 

 

Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to): 

  • Safety, Health, Environment & Quality (SHEQ): Ensure GIS data supports SHEQ compliance, including environmental overlays, hazard mapping, and risk assessments. Integrate spatial data into SHEQ reporting and planning tools to enhance visibility and decision-making. 

  • Operational Excellence: Develop and implement a strategic GIS roadmap aligned with Defence estate priorities, data requirements and asset management frameworks. Lead the integration of GIS platforms with maintenance, planning, and asset management systems (e.g. ESRI & SAP). 

  • Team Development & Culture: Lead and mentor a team of GIS analysts and technical specialists, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration. Conduct skills assessments and develop targeted training plans to build strategic GIS capability. 

  • Customer Engagement: Develop stakeholder engagement strategies to promote GIS adoption and value across Defence estate users. Provide spatial data visualisations and dashboards tailored to stakeholder needs. 

 

About you 

  • A degree in Geography, Geospatial Science, GIS, Engineering, or a related discipline. 

  • Extensive experience in strategic GIS leadership. 

  • Proficiency in GIS platforms (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS) and enterprise system integration. 

  • Strong understanding of spatial data governance and analytics. 

  • You mentor and develop spatial analysts and technical specialists to build a high-performing, technically capable workforce 

  • Experience leading technical teams and delivering GIS capability uplift. 

  • Desirable certifications in project management or data governance. 

  • Eligibility for Defence security clearance. 

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills 

  • A commitment to safety, compliance, and customer satisfaction. 

  • Support the Base teams and work as a Team-of-Teams integrator and facilitator across the state and region.  

  • Must be eligible to hold a Defence Security Clearance. As a result of this requirement the applicant must be an Australian Citizen and be willing to undertake and maintain a satisfactory Australian Federal Police.
